you are right they are well known for this. the water is going past the head gasket into the cylinder and blown out or burnt have a look at the exaust may show excess of water.£600 to correct head of skim gaskets etc.

i'd suggest your head gasket is about to go. it happened on my peugeot 205 1.6gti, i initially had a water leak, i fixed the water leak but still was losing water, then as i was driving home my head gasket failed. you will want your cylinder head skimmed, id recommend a full gasket set and new head bolts. but i am no mechanic. it might be worth also getting your cam belt changed if it has not been done recently as this may save you on labour costs near on in the future.

it most prob will be the water pump, how long does it take to empty, it will be the bearings inside the pump, watch it does not collaspe as it will snap your timming belt which will cost you a few hundred to repair, if it only needs topping up say once a week or so you can get a seal kit that you just put in the rad were the water goes ie radweld, rad cement, waynes etc from halfords or motorworld etc, mt advice get it done or seal and get rid

don't assume that the head gasket has blown or is about to blow.....check all hoses and radiator for leaks. i have had similar problem and found it was the radiator leaking. do not rely on the radweld.....this should be used for emergencies only.....get the radiator changed. also make sure the anti-freeze is changed every 2 years without fail.
