the knock sensor(or lambda sensor as it is known) is a device set in the exhaust pipe with a wire connected to it usually just below the exhaust manifold.

i'm sorry to disagree but the knock sensor and lambda sensor are different things. the lambda sensor sits in the exhaust pipe and measures oxygen content in the exhaust gases. this is used to regulate the air fuel ratio. the knock sensor is screwed into the engine block usually at a mid way point front or rear (not sure on this car) but it will be situated below the cylinder head usually. the knock sensor is used to regulate the engine timing. it keeps the timing as advanced as possible without pinking. what it is actually detecting is premature fuel detonation(pinking). check it is plugged in and that the wires to it are intact (sometimes the plastic covering can look ok but the wiring inside may have fatigued and broken). have a look under the protective rubber boot on the plug that connects to it.

i'm sorry you are are absolutely right the knock sensor does detect engine knock and alters the advance of the engine system. the lambda measures the oxygen in the exhaust to protect the catalytic converter.

on the 406 the knock sensor is situated in the front face of the engine block. you got to remove thesplsh guard from under the engine. if not working or badley fitted can lead to engine damage due to excessive knock (pinking. i realised my mistake after submitting it but alan beat me to it.
